Oh, no worries about liveliness here that I can see! Where are those guys and what are they doing at about 0:41? It looks like a cross between a locker room and a student chem lab. I wonder why that guy is wearing boots in that gang shower that looks like an overgrown horizontal Bradley pole.

I like the idea of separate bathing ponds for men and women. Once you've skinny dipped swim suits are forever seen as a major annoyance. Even better if the men's pond has a half hidden recreation area off to the side. Most likely I'd spend most of my time just napping in the sun, but I like knowing the option is there ;-)

People of color? The only thing I can think of is going through antique shops in areas that are/were summer vacation spots for wealthy African Americans. I can't remember town names but there're two in upstate NY, one at the east end of Long Island, and one in Maine. I'd imagine the shops in Martha's Vinyard were picked clean years ago.

Great work as always!

Hi Anton. That photo is a boarding school photo by Willl McBride. Wanna say he shot for LIFE magazine.

Sounds like London has the goods for bathing ponds. I’ll stay in the shade. This fair lady can’t handle much fun in the sun. Unless I want to turn into a lobster. lol

Great montage Clint. The 3 boxers 2:23 John Conteh and Bunny Johnson are still alive, George Francis was a top boxing trainer, he passed in 2002. It would be interesting to know where the lake the image was taken at was located, maybe the men's bathing pond at Highgate London? It's George Francis in the middle, JC left, BJ right. A fine twice upstanding appearance from Andy Chavez 😎 too. Mean and moody Dennis Lavia with his Disneyesque Blue Bird tattoos 🔥 My mine of useless information coming out again 😎 Cheers DougT 🇫🇴

I LOVE that you know the history of that trio. I didn’t have a clue, but loved the photo so much. The caption didn’t give much other info, but I suspect you know better than most. A bathing pond? Cool! I’m fixated on Dennis Lavia and love the sweet charm of Andy Chavez. It’s rare to see men of color from that era…and I believe I have a few of him and Dennis together (which I may or may not have already posted). Cheers!

Yes, Andy Chavez sticks out in my memory for some reason.

Be careful that's the only thing he sticks. Sorry...I couldn't resist. :-)

Thanks Clint, yuppers there are two 'bathing ponds' in Highgate close to Hampstead and Hampstead Heath. The latter is/was a very outdoors cruising area, very well known! Hampstead

Heath can be accessed by Northern Line tube line. The ponds, one for males and one for females, which they still are. Natural sunbathing and recreation, including gayness, are promoted at both ponds and all really originated in the bohemian period of civilization of the leafy suburbs of Hampstead/Highgate London. Highgate of course is home to the Highgate Cemetery where luminaries and dignitaries are buried. Karl Marks, George Michael, William Friese-Greene the inventor(?) of cinematography etc, etc. there is lots on Google and Wikipedia about Highgate Cemetery 😎 Basically if you were important you got buried there. Now if I can root around for the backstory of the ponds I will. Also the Brompton Cemetery and Catacombs in Earls Court has a rich history of inhabitants and the paths and avenues are a very popular cruising area too 😮 I'm sure you have some similar places in LA, after all George Michael got caught at a park 'tea room' or as in 🇬🇧 Cottaging. Cheers DougT 🇫🇴

Oh, George Michael…any conversations involving me have my attention. I once visited that little restroom (across the street from the Beverly Hills Hotel, btw). Nothing was going on when me (and a girl friend) visited back then, but who knows what goes on there now. As for the ponds, I love it. The only place I can think of similar is in Texas. There’s a lake with a beach called “Hippy Hollow” in Austin. Went there back in college and it was relaxing. Some extracurriculars, but mostly just sunbathing. Calfornia has a few beaches, but far fewer than I would imagine. Cheers
