I couldn’t agree more, Clint. Tech has stopped feeling fun and has become exhausting. I’m worn down by the constant data leaks and that gnawing sense that I’m always being harvested for something. Like you said, apps that once felt exciting now just feel like clutter.
There’s actually a group of young people leaning into this discontent in a really powerful way. They’re calling themselves Luddites—teens who are rejecting smartphones and social media to rediscover real-world connection. They’re currently working on a short doc about The Luddite Club: https://www.ludditeclubdoc.com. There’s something so hopeful in that kind of rebellion. It’s not about nostalgia. It’s about reclaiming attention, creativity, and a slower pace.
I’ve personally scaled way back too. Like you, I’m no longer chasing the newest gadget or app. And I am so over all the fees. $9.99 here, $19.99 there, seriously, that stuff adds up. I want room to be bored again. Remember boredom? It’s the birthplace of creativity and freedom.
Thanks again for the mention. Great pic of Gore Vidal! Love your work.
I love this, David. Thanks for sharing about the doc! As for boredom, I used to climb trees with a book or notebook and just daydream for hours on end. Some of the best times of my life. Cheers and keep up the great work. I’m playing catch up on your podcast. Nice work!
Thanks Clint and Gore Vidal and Happy Birthday Susan Flannery, Queen Mother of The Bold and The Beautiful. When Brad Bell made them available, I downloaded many early episodes. The title of the show was always quite appropriate. James Storm was also wonderful in those early episodes, Barnabas Collins without that whole vampire thing.
I didn’t know Brad Bell did that, Steve…very cool! I remember watching TBATB in its early years. Especially during summer break. This latch-key kid was a BIG fan of soaps…mostly on ABC, but I tried to keep track of TBATB and YAR too. Cheers!
was just getting ready for the cyber fight. It's just I haven't seen your blog combined on SS messages before, otherwise I wouldn't have seen 'Matts' trolling Cheers DougT
I’m fine to have civil discourse with folks, but one-word bandits are typically fucking bots or fucking idiots. And I have zero patience for their pitiful existence. So they just get blocked and I move on with my life and work. Not sure what’s going on with your reply issue…I’ll reply to your email a little later though. Cheers!
Recently I've been really wanting a Kindle vs. reading on the Kindle app on my phone or iPad because that way I won't be inundated with notifications from this and that. I know I can put my phone in Do Not Disturb mode, but I think it's more than that for me. I want to put my effing phone down and not have it around and just read.
Did I sound insane before the fall, Larry? lol I’m sure I probably did. Moving does unhinge me a bit. I’m feeling much better and find Gore Vidal a sassy one. Which I love. Cheers to you!
Sigh, I thought it was just because my 81 year old pre-cambrian brain just could not comprehend the confusing complexities that seem to be so instinctive and absolutely necessary to the several preceding generations. I want my flip phone back and a camera.
Oh, Dennis, you made me look up Precambrian and now I can’t stop thinking about the era. Or how much your comment made me smile. Hope you find a good flip phone and camera for your next, less-complicated tech adventures. Cheers!
Hah, fantastic. Ever since I got my degree in Elementary Education back in 1966, my goal has been to get kids interested in learning by opening new areas that tempt their curiosity. I am gratified that I still have that skill!!!
However, while I've tempted you with "precambrian", I've not convinced myself to chase down the complexities of AI nor even phones that require one's needing it on their person 'always for everything' connected to the "world"!!!
Well said Clint. KISS (Google it if your unsure) is my mantra. But I'm from the dinosaur period in evolution, yes I do eventually, begrudgingly, accept newer technology, just not always the first in the queue. I have begrudgingly installed
on line banking, only because so many 🇬🇧banks have closed physical branches BUT not pay by phone app. Let others test it out first is my moto . As a kid my first mobile communications device was 2 tin cans joined by strong, it worked, just limited by how long your string was 😎😁 As usual Cheers DougT 🇫🇴🇬🇧
Ahh, yes, Doug. But what a revelation it was that 'sound' is nothing but vibrations along a string, or through the air, or through electric variations through miles of wire and, now, through space itself. We tend to forget the implications of things we've learned as inquisitive kids!!! Unfortunately, we can also pick up negative vibrations from an ignorant society that tells us we're NOT OK! THAT we have to learn the hard way - by opposition and strength in ourselves.
Oh, I’ve been trying to KISS it since before my first (male) kiss. Some goes have been more successful than others. This one seems more ready to take. As for the tin cans, I found yelling loudly worked even better. My family was full of what we call “howlerers”. Probably because we’re related to howler monkies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howler_monkey! :-p
So many Acronyms I know and love too, many I have used with you on here, KISS Keep It Simple Stupid and POETS day Push(or piss) Of Early Tomorrow's Saturday
Agreed, D.C. Having worked on numerous apps over the years (in the entertainment space), I loathed the releases that didn’t make things better for the user. So many “improvements: are just corporate machinations, designed to make someone richer or get more attention inside the org. It’s one of the reasons I had to leave that world. Ain’t nobody got time for all that ego…especially without the matching talent. :-p

I try to do the same, Dan. I find I read so much more that way!
Perhaps it was the fall, but you sound sane!!! Thanks for remembering Gore Vidal. Quite a handsome young man and intelligent! (turn on for me)
Did I sound insane before the fall, Larry? lol I’m sure I probably did. Moving does unhinge me a bit. I’m feeling much better and find Gore Vidal a sassy one. Which I love. Cheers to you!
Of course not! I saw an opportunity and took it. Just silly fun! I'm pleased you're feeling better! Sante!

You’re delightful and delovely, Mr. Dunnum!
And YOU are delicious, my friend!!!

Perhaps Matt will also think my comment is Pitiful too, after all it must be refreshing to be a troll. Cheers DougT
Matt has been blocked and reported. Trolls ain’t worth any of our time. Give those bitches no attention or oxygen. 🤪💅😘

Ah, yes Dennis all those things we learned as inquisitive kids before we were supposed to know better......🤨😎😁
