Yesterday, after a busy morning of running errands, I came home and crashed for most of the afternoon. When I woke up, I was dazed, confused…and starving.
As soon as I got my belly full, I fell back asleep again.
Why all the sleep? Well, I’m an insomniac—and I also had my first pneumonia vaccine on Monday. The nurse practitioner warned me it might knock me on my butt. And she wasn’t wrong. The extra rest was lovely, but by the time night rolled around, my mind was bouncing like an over-caffeinated bunny.
Not only had I napped most of the day away…I was also buzzing with excitement.
Today I’m heading down to Anaheim to see a dear friend who’s in town on business. We don’t have a chance to see each other very often—the last time was four years ago—so I’m beyond thrilled. And my brain decided to throw a little all-night party.
Instead of tossing and turning, I decided to make the video above to help coax my mind into slowing down and (hopefully) drifting off. I know video art isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I love making it.
For me, finger-painting with moving light—right on my iPad—is a good way to turn my restless energy into something both beautiful and relaxing.
Keep calm and carry on!

“Many people who excel are self-taught.”
Herb Ritts
“I think a lot of the time these days people are so concerned about having the right camera and the right film and the right lenses and all the special effects that go along with it, even the computer, that they're missing the key element.”
Herb Ritts
