Back in my freelance web designer days—late 1990s to the early 2000s—I loved being able to work homo alono.
No commute. No office politics. No pointless meetings. Just me, my brain, my keyboard, my mouse, my computer, and a couple of glowing CRT screens.
But I sometimes resented being stuck at home all the time.
My carefully curated little command center lived there. My DSL connection lived there. So when I needed to work, I had to sit in the same chair, staring at the same walls, day after day.
And listen, I love alone time…but even I hit a wall.
Cabin fever can be oh so mighty real.
Fast forward to now and honestly, it feels like I live in a sci-fi novel.
I can now literally work anywhere. Coffee shop. Hotel room. Rest stop. Cruise ship. Passenger seat.
The wild part? My entire “office” fits in a small backpack.
And just to be clear, just because I can work anywhere doesn’t mean I do. Boundaries matter. Rest matters. Vacations absolutely matter.
But like any good queen, I love having options.
Being able to write, create, post, and handle business from wherever I am is real freedom. Not theoretical. Not aspirational. Actual, real-world freedom.
There’s a little magic involved too.
I’ll sit down somewhere new, open my laptop, and just…drop in. The words still show up. The ideas still flow. Creativity doesn’t seem to care if I’m at home or 1,200 miles away.
If anything, the change of scenery wakes something up. New thoughts. Fresh energy.
But let’s not pretend it’s all effortless glamour.
You’ve gotta pack smart or pay the price. Laptop, charger, headphones, external hard drive, and more cables than should legally exist.
If you forget even one thing, the whole mobile office can fall apart.
But if you’re like me, you eventually learn to build in backup plans for your own forgetfulness. Case in point: I forgot my external hard drive on this trip. Oops.
Thankfully, I have my most important files backed up to Google Drive, so I can keep working. Well, as long as my internet connection works.
Without a solid internet connect, my magical mobile office turns into a very expensive typewriter. Suddenly I’m hunting Wi-Fi like it’s water in the desert.
But when it does work? It’s incredible.
Work feels lighter. Writing feels more alive. And life feels a lot less boxed in.
I used to be tethered to a desktop. Now my laptop goes everywhere I do.
Keep calm and type on!
