The Old Man and the Sea is the only Hemingway book I own, a bedraggled hard-cover copy of it that I rescued from my parents' house before they gave most of their books away. And how have I lived for 55 years without learning that I was born on Hemingway's birthday? Of course he was a Cancer. 🌊🦀🌕

Thanks Clint and Happy Birthday Ernest. If you haven't read it recently, I highly recommend A Moveable Feast. His son Patrick and grandson Sean did a "restored" edition 15 years ago. Also:

Hemingway in Love: The Untold Story: A Memoir by A. E. Hotchner

Running with the Bulls: My Years with the Hemingways by Valerie (Danby-Smith) Hemingway.

and Dear Papa: The Letters of Patrick and Ernest Hemingway. 👀☘💚🧡❤💛💜🖤🤎

Very nice piece on Hemingway.

I'm thinking if you had seen photos of Hemingway when you were in middle school, you would have fallen in love with the man. He was astonishing handsome in is youth. And soooooo masculine! Heart throbbing!

Thanks, Nik. Appreciate you reading and commenting. As for Hemingway, I’m pretty sure I did see some photos early on, but middle school was complicated. I was doing my best to be straight at the time. Alas, that obviously didn’t take. But my love for Hemingway did. :-)

“He taught me that simple doesn’t mean shallow. That pain doesn’t need to shout to be heard. That language, when used with care, can cut straight to the heart of things.” This hit me in a great way. Absolutely. Pain doesn’t have to be loud: it can be quiet & powerful.

What a lovely burgeoning artistic sensibility and coming of age write up!! I also appreciated the photograph of the young, dashing Hemingway in the hospital bed. Thanks!

Thank you, Larry. You’re a gem and a gent. Cheers!

I'll leave the reading and understand to those that.......(can) Clint you know my thoughts on investing commitments to literature after 'The Frontrunner' robbed me of all my emotions and sense abilities. jeez the trick that Patricia Nell Warren pulled on the reader in the last few chapters has scarred me for life 🧐😮🙄 and reading for pleasure. Ggggrrrr. Cheers DougT 🇫🇴 🇬🇧

That book did a number on you, boo. Find yourself some sage and leave Ms. Warren’s mess in the dust. Along with her tragic story. Virtual hugs!

If only she had the balls to make that story a happy ending....
