A few kind folks noticed I didn’t post a new long-form montage on YouTube this week and reached out to make sure everything’s okay. I appreciate that. Well, everything’s fine. I just fell down another photo research rabbit hole.
I was working on a new video when a subscriber sent me a link.
Now, if you’ve spent any time digging around for things on the internet, you know how this story goes. One link turns into ten. Ten turns into fifty. Before you know it, you’ve lost an entire day (or three) exploring a digital collection you didn’t even know existed.
That’s exactly what happened to me this past week.
The link led to a collection of photographs I had never seen before. And not just a handful of interesting images either. We’re talking about a motherlode. The kind of archive where every few minutes another photo pops up that makes me sit up a little gayer and say, “How have I never seen this before?!”
So naturally, I did what any responsible photo nerd would do. I stopped making the video and switched into download mode.
Over the past few years, I’ve collected thousands of photos. Which means finding truly new ones is getting harder. And harder. And harder. Even so, I still spend time most days digging through archives, museum collections, and social media posts, looking for fresh finds. Sometimes weeks go by without anything significant turning up. And then sometimes you stumble onto a collection that feels like striking oil.
When that happens, I stop what I’m doing and start digging.
Long story short, I’ve pushed this week’s YouTube premiere to next week. The video will premiere Monday. I promise. But for now, I’ve got hundreds, if not thousands, of photos to dig through and download.
The beautiful thing about the internet is that, even after all these years, there are still hidden corners just waiting to be discovered. Uncatalogued collections. Forgotten archives. Entire visual histories sitting quietly on a server somewhere until the right curious mind stumbles across them.
And when I do stumble across a new source? Down the rabbit hole I go!
Three days in, I’m still digging through the one that link uncovered. And I have a feeling I’m just scratching the surface. There’s still more treasure buried in there.
So if anyone is wondering where I’ve been, I’ve been prospecting.
And let me tell you something: There’s gold on them there interwebs, y’all.
Keep calm and dig on!

Like a metal detectorist, you probe the internet, occasionally finding treasure, rarely a real trove. Congratulations on your getting a big solid beep from your sweeps!
