Counterprogramming is the practice of offering alternative content designed to attract audiences away from more popular entertainment and news.
I love that idea, because unintentionally, I’ve been counterprogramming since I started posting videos on YouTube. I didn’t set out to counter anything. I just started making the kind of stuff I wanted to see more of. Stuff that felt a little slower, a little quieter, a little more hopeful and human.
These days, I call myself a content creator. Not that long ago, this “job” barely existed. Or at least, it wasn’t something I could reasonably say out loud without air quotes and a slight shrug. It sounded aspirational, or delusional, or just embarrassing. Like I was admitting to a hobby, not a livelihood. Something I did on the side while I figured out what my “real” work was supposed to be.
What I do used to require a small team, a studio, a budget, and a lot of gatekeepers. Today, it’s just me, a laptop, a few apps, and an internet connection. And a lot of time alone with my thoughts.
So while the world keeps turning itself upside down, while the news cycle grows louder, darker, and more unhinged by the day, and while sports, politics, and outrage fight for every last drop of our collective attention, I’m over here making stuff.
Not to compete with the noise, but to create an alternative to it. To offer something you can enjoy without feeling like you’re being shouted at.
And honestly? A lot of my work is just me trying to share my sassy, sexy, and slightly silly point-of-view. Sometimes it’s beauty. Sometimes it’s booty. Sometimes it’s…let’s call it buoyancy. That feeling of lightness. A reminder that we can still float, still feel, still find joy, even in these strange times.
Which brings me to the part where I put on my marketing hat:
If you like what I make, I hope you will share it. With your dears, your nears, and your queers. With the friends who text you memes and videos at 2am. With the ones who are burned out, bored, curious, lonely, or just open to something new.
Sharing is its own kind of counterprogramming. It’s you saying, “Here, I found something I think you might enjoy.”
I know my content isn’t for everyone. I’ve more than made peace with that. But it’s for more people than I ever imagined. And I have a strong hunch there are a lot more out there who would enjoy it if/when they ever stumble across it.
So I’m going to get back to doing my part. I’m going to talk about it more. Link to it more. Promote it more. Not in a hustle-bro way, but in a hey-this-matters-to-me way. The kind that comes from actually caring about the work, and wanting it to share it with as many people as possible.
Because caring is sharing. Because sharing is how counterprogramming actually works. Not by shouting louder than the noise. But by passing along the good stuff quietly, person to person.
Keep calm and tell a friend!

MAN CRUSH(ES) OF THE DAY
“People were saying that David Geffen and I had gotten married and it just blew me away. Not that they thought I was gay, but that they thought I could land a guy that hot.”
Keanu Reeves“It still strikes me as strange that anyone could have any moral objection to someone else’s sexuality. It’s like telling someone else how to clean their house.”
River Phoenix

Well Clint, how I would, if I could sprinkle fairy dust around your Collide Press path. But I can't. I can only comment from afar. I can like your posts and when I can, donate some cash. What I won't ever do is show you any disrespect even when I can't see where, or why your heading. Cheers DougT 🏴🇬🇧
